Steward Duties
- Sign up new Members.
- Sign Dues Card and date. Include address, phone number, name, and ZPID number (on MSU ID Card). Take photo of completed card. Send completed card photo via text to our cell phone.
Go to Local 1585 website. https://miafscme.org/local1585 Click on
Take Action, Join Today button.Complete form. Put your ZPID number in Job Classification. Sign electronically.
- Represent members when or if discipline is or may be involved.
- Inquire before meeting nature or subject matter of meeting from manager. If meeting is discipline, meet with member to inform him before if possible. Inform him this is not the time to debate the action. That comes in the grievance process. Inform him that he should not sign the DAF document.
- Attend meeting. If discipline is occurring (says DAF at Disciplinary Action Form, at top). Coaching, Counseling, Attendance Reviews, or Job Performance Improvement Plan do not count as discipline.
- Take note of time, date, people attending, location, member name, member, job classification, and action taken. Email President and Chief Steward this information.
- You as Steward signs DAF near the box that is marked employee declines to sign. Include steward next to your name. Print your name as well.
- Get a copy for yourself and member. We get a copy emailed to our office and will attach your notes from email to this form.
- Have the members call us directly to discuss grievance options. If meetings are not discipline in nature you should attend as witness and advisor for all discussions and inquiry meetings. Take note of time, date, people attending, location, member name, member, job classification, and topic of meeting. Email President and Chief Steward this information.
- Management encourages staff to have multiple people attend these meetings. If you think it is necessary for additional union representation, please request.
- Communicate with Union Staff any information, concerns, questions, or problems.
- Remember all information and discussions should remain private, and only shared with officers, executive board, and stewards as needed. If asked about what transpired in a meeting about a member by other members, refer them to the member in the meeting to answer their questions. Do not speak for them.
- Read and know your contract. Use the index to answer contract questions.
- Meet with unit managers to discuss potential areas of concern.
