Position: Organizer
Salary Range: $57,341.76 - $84,179.04
JOB SUMMARY:
This position, paid on a salary basis, requires knowledge of the Michigan Employment Relations Commission (MERC) procedures and the National Labor Relations Bureau (NLRB) procedures and is responsible for successfully conducting and running organizing campaigns. Performs activities associated with campaigns, organizes committees, makes home visits, performs voter assessment, and plans campaigns implementing the AFSCME Organizing Model. Implementation of the AFSCME Organizing Model includes targeting, pre-petition campaigns, election campaigns, card-check campaigns, and first contract campaigns. This position consistently exercises discretion and independent judgment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts one-on-one organizing through home and work site visits to accurately assess and recruit supporters and leaders; guides their activities on behalf of the union and identifies attitudes of individual workers to be able to plan appropriate messaging/actions.
- Develops and leads worker mobilizations; plans and conducts meetings with organizing committees and other workers in the campaign including public speaking and conducting workshops.
- Develops broad, representative organizing committees of worker-leaders, and trains and deploys them to move the campaign.
- Contributes significantly to the development of the strategic campaign planning/message, incorporates campaign message into one-on-one communications; drafts and designs basic leaflets, newsletters, and other communications’ methods in conjunction with the Communications staff.
- Writes field/work/turf plans to implement the overall organizing campaign and goals, and develops and implements strategies to counter anti-union campaigns.
- Obtains, creates, and maintains relevant employee lists which may include input on, and operation of, computerized database systems.
- Recruits volunteer organizers; works with locals/councils on Volunteer Member Organizers and contract campaigns.
- Troubleshoot and resolve problems within existing groups of members threatening decertification.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma and a minimum of 6 (six) months experience in union organizing; or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: knowledge of union organizing practices and principles; basic knowledge of labor laws, and union organizing; knowledge of anti-union employer tactics. Possesses leadership and motivational skills and exhibits good oral and written communication skills. Must at all times possess a valid driver’s license, suitable transportation, and provide proof of insurance at mandated levels. Extended travel, variable work schedules and temporary assignments are necessary.

- Must be able to work at desk/computer for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to have repetitive wrist/hand/finger movement to work on computer and/or related office equipment.

- May be required to reach, bend, stoop, and handle objects with hands and/or fingers, talk and/or hear, and see.
- Position requires light to moderate work with 20 (twenty) pounds maximum weight to lift and carry.
