President's Monthly Report

Thank you to those of you who attended the MLK celebration in Detroit last month. AFSCME 1583 was well represented. Pictures will be uploaded soon to the AFSCME 1583 website –- stay tuned. 

I am attending the ACLC as well as the Huron Valley Labor Council meetings monthly on behalf of the AFSCME membership. These meetings are important because networking with the other unions on campus and at Michigan Medicine creates unity and support for each other. 

Welcome new members! Thank you for joining the AFSCME Local 1583 union and for helping us to further strengthen our position at the University of Michigan. In Solidarity we stand! 

Our membership is growing -- we are getting stronger! 

In the past two months the union has signed up over fifty new members! I would like to highlight: Amelia Minnifield, Kimberly Williams, and Marvin Reese. Thanks for going above and beyond with connecting, engaging, and signing up new members! 

As a rule, it is best to introduce yourself to anyone new in your department or area as soon as possible. Hearing about the union from a union member is the best way to engage and encourage new members to join the union.

Do you know that being a dues paying member in good standing means that you can hold any office in the union? You can also be a member of the bargaining team, vote on the contract, hold any office, attend union meetings, and enjoy union events. 

I am currently doing weekly site visits at Michigan Medicine. If you would like to meet me in the cafeteria for a conversation, please reach out to me so that we can set up a time to meet. I am happy to answer any questions that you may have.

Not receiving emails? Please be sure to update your email and password with HITS. The union primarily relies on email to notify you of important union information as well as upcoming events. Unfortunately, the Union does not manage this information.

Site Visits- South Quad-Orientation, Michigan Medicine, Building Services Orientation, Patient Transportation, Transportation Department and PFANS and Flint Campus.

District Stewards are needed on Central Campus! Please Join the team! As a District Steward, you will assist your fellow union members, Chief Stewards, and your Union when you become part of the team.
