Article 25: Paid Time Off

Section B para 3: employees can request time off in March and September for all scheduled time off in October during the following May through October, and from November through April, unless a department establishes a procedure allowing more frequent requests for time off. In that case, requests for time off will be made for those time periods.

Discipline:

Discipline should be both corrective and progressive rather than punitive. Michigan Medicine and University (campus) will follow the discipline procedure, which is corrective and progressive. The discipline procedure will be documented warning, written warning, a one-day disciplinary layoff, a two-day disciplinary layoff, or written warning instead of disciplinary layoff (paper DLO- for absenteeism only), and discharge. If an employee has remained discipline free for one year, the supervisor will repeat a step before progressing with progressive discipline. Paper DLO’s will be identified as such and used as disciplinary action for unexcused absenteeism. For serious offenses, steps of progressive discipline may vary.

Article 38

Section H: Intermittent No-call/No-show

If an employee is absent from work for three (3) non-consecutive days within 12 months without notifying the University, except when failure to notify or work is due to circumstances beyond the control of the employee, the following progressive discipline shall apply:

First incident: One Day DLO

Second Incident: Two Day DLO

Third Incident: The university will schedule a DRC with the Union to discuss the circumstances of the case, which may result in further discipline, up to and including discharge.

If an employee signs up for overtime and fails to report for that shift, it will be considered a no call-no show.

Inappropriate Language:

Be aware of your surroundings and people around you. Avoid sensitive subjects, personal, intimate conversations are not appropriate. The use of profanity is never appropriate. Using discriminatory words or demeaning words is not appreciated by anyone. Words that are spoken jokingly or in anger, and inappropriately, can have serious repercussions. If a situation has become uncomfortable and confrontational, do not hesitate to disengage as quickly and quietly as possible. Never be afraid to step away to de-escalate the situation.

You can request a steward for any problems affecting your work performance or if you believe that your contract is being violated. Be specific in giving details of the violation, including what, where, when, and who is involved.

Chief Stewards can be contacted at the union hall on Fridays. Please feel free to contact me anytime. My number is (734)323-4868. Email virgo@umich.edu or the union hall (734 )480-3852.

In Solidarity,
